A Mother Beguiled

He vowed that he’d love her
‘Till death do they part
And all seemed so perfect
Back there at the start

Then along came the children
Who took his place in her heart
He started the drinking
And driving her family apart
Her life all controlling
With her freedom denied
Until all that he left was
A Mother beguiled

Then came the violence
She could no longer pretend
And hide all the bruises
Away from her friends
He swore he still loved her
Although he now lied
So she was left as
A Mother defiled

From his paranoid passion
She now lived in fear
With a deep down concern for
All those she held dear
Her self esteem, shattered
So that she no longer smiled
A broken woman left as
A Mother reviled

It’s a tragic story
You may have heard it before
Would she have courage
To walk out the door
Or was it her destiny
To be thus denied
And to remain forever
A Mother beguiled.
