THEIR DUTY DONE

They came home from the battle
They came back after the war was won
Back to all of their families
After their duty done.

They came back as our heroes
That is, all those who still remained
The healthy or maimed
In their eyes were framed
The horror
They’d been living through.

Oh Yes! they all had stories
Stories that none could ever tell
Of that carnage
No pride or glory
Horrific scenes, so ghastly
No man should ever see.

They had survived there in the mud
Among the corpses and all the blood
There to face an enemy
Just some other Mother’s sons
Who’d been sent to fight that day
On the other side of the fray

Now they are all Brothers in Arms
Strewn across a battleground
In some foreign land far away
Where their bones still lie today
Left for history to tell
Have we learned the lesson well.

(Short instrumental break)

Still, someone should explain
Why so many died in vain
Why they died so young
Their duty done.
