From the Get Go

It was right from the beginning
That I saw her laughing face
It set my heart singing
I was ready for the chase

There were swarms of bees
Round my honey pot
To be smoked away
If ever I was to get to
And win her hand some way

A faint heart had never won
The charms of a fair lady
No, that’s not how it is done
It was right from the get go
At the start of life’s great race

Ready, steady, now let’s go
Slow and steady set the pace
Mindful on that journey
That the winner takes it all
The losers they all fall

I was left to collect it all
So there I was adrift on cloud nine
Floating along in her heavenly air
Believing she was all mine

(instrumental interlude)

Had I known that cloud could be let down
Nothing left beneath my feet
Drowning in a pool of misery
Dropped in water, way too deep
It was too deep
Struggling there, struggling there
I was gasping for my last drop of air

And she was laughing there
Way out of my depth
My vision dim
I was out of breath
And my whole future was looking grim
Right from the get go
I should’ve known
It was time I learned to swim.
