Why Won’t You Stay

Hear what they say
Before you leave today
Words with a sway
That may prompt you to stay
For your path will be longer
And the going harder, so much harder
Each step you take
Along the long and lonely way

Why won’t you stay?
Watch the children play
Not much left to say
Before you drift astray
If only to remind her
While under this sulky oak tree
That we once had planted
One September long ago

While I hold her
Are those her tears now
Falling on my shoulder
And there’s no point I should scold her
For she has turned away

Now she has gone
How to remain strong
Sulking under our tree
Waiting on her call to tea
But the leaves have all gone now
And the world grown cold and colder
With the branches bare
No one else to care
I’m left there
Without a prayer
Not even ……
Nothing left to share
Just wishing you were there

Wishing you were there …….
