Yes, I saw Santa Claus On one special year A story I remember well I’ll relate it for you here
I had a very private space When I was very small Up some steep and creaky stairs I thought I had it all Of course, it had no chimney So, on Christmas Eve, instead We tied my Christmas stocking At the foot of my bed Securely at the foot of my old bed
This meant poor old Santa Must clamber up the stair For all this trouble We thought it only fair To leave a tray with cookies And a long glass of milk We left it near the stocking On my folded quilt
In that silent night Came a telltale creak I opened up a startled eye And dared to take a peek Rising from the flight of stairs Arose this awesome sight A portly silhouette appeared Through the pale moonlight
It moved across my attic And fumbled with a sack Munching on the cookies I heard it clamber back Christmas morning, I told Mother (Afraid she’d think, I lied) But really, I saw Santa Claus Right here by my side
With a loving hug, she said ‘Yes, I know that you did, Dear Come into the kitchen And see what I found here’ I hurried down for breakfast And saw a bright red coat And pinned to the lapel Was this scribbled note
‘Thank you for the cookies And the lovely glass of milk But I fear I spilt the latter Down the front of my red silk ‘Still, I was thirsty And so opened up a beer As a toast, I’m wishing You all much Christmas cheer
May I ask a special favour Would you wash the coat, my Dear It’s become quite unsightly All stained with milk and beer In my sleigh, I have a spare And that’s why I left it here So, you have no need to worry I’ll pick it up next year.’
