(Instrumental intro)
Dancing around the Maypole
To welcome the new Season in
Knowing this old ritual
As the harbinger of Spring
Round and round the Maypole
All the young folk joined in
Joining in this festival
So, the planting could begin
Praying for the rains to come
And so they could portend
The harvest would be plentiful
At the Season’s end
(Instrumental interlude)
Flirting around the Maypole
That’s where I first spied you
Teasing as the boys skipped by
As you were wont to do
Laughing aloud merrily
Kicking up a knee
Showing a shapely ankle
Sure, all the boys could see
Caught up in the Maypole
Tangled knee to knee
Was this to be my chance
But did you notice me?
Among so many others
Whatever was I to do?
I had to think of something
The dance was almost through
Twining around the Maypole
There I was with you
Weaving around the Maypole
Ribbons red, orange and blue
(Instrumental interlude)
Wishing around the Maypole
Hoping my dreams would come true
I wished around the Maypole
That I could marry you.
